Wellfleet was founded in June of 1763, the name is thought to have come from "Whale Fleet". Before Wellfleet was incorporated it was a part of Eastham referred to as Billingsgate. It is now known as the "Art Gallery Town", and the source for famous Wellfleet oysters.

Parking Information
Stickers : Resident stickers are $15. Non-resident stickers are $60/ week, $100 for two weeks and $250 for the season. A three-day sticker is available for $30 from motels and inns.
Parking : Parking is $15 a day at White Crest and Cahoon Hollow, the only beaches with daily parking permits. Free parking at Mayo Beach and the town pier. Stickers available at beach office, town marina, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.

Places of Interest
- Uncle Tim's Bridge: This wooden boardwalk follows along a marsh and opens up to a small tree-covered hill. A hidden treasure - its great for picnics or a quiet getaway. Located on Commercial Street.
- Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: Filled with pine groves and salt marshes, this 650-acre reserve is where you will find many indigenous Cape Cod birds. The Massachusetts Audubon Society gives guided tours of the area. Located just off Route 6.
- Historical Society Museum: Antique maps, flags, firearms, photographs and clothing make up this museum's exhibits. Visitors can gather real insight into 18th Century Wellfleet life. Located on Main Street off Route 6.
- Wellfleet Pier: This pier has many shops and ice cream parlors. Numerous boats and fishing vessels lined up. Many events are held here, which include town band concerts. Take Main Street to Commercial Street to Kendrick Avenue to Chequessett Knolls Dr. and follow to the end.
