Founded in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold, the name Martha's Vineyard came in honor of his infant daughter and the amount of wild grapes on the island. Along with Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands, the Vineyard was bought for forty pounds by Thomas Mayhew. Mayhew's son founded Edgartown in 1642, where English settlers lived
cooperatively
with the Wampanoags for many years.
