Chatham was founded in 1656 when William Nickerson from Yarmouth "purchased" a large piece of land from the Sachem Mattaquason for the cost of a boat. However it wasn't until 1712 that the land was incorporated as a town separate from Eastham.

Parking Information
Stickers :Resident stickers are $20. Permits are issued at Permits Department, 283 George Ryder Road. Non-resident stickers on sale at beaches for $12 per day, $50 per week, and $85 for the season.

- Monomoy Wilderness Area: This 9-mile strip of land is
diminishing
from coastal erosion and is protected as a National Wildlife Refuge. This piece of land is Accessible only by boat. The Massachusetts Audubon Society gives limited tours.
- Chatham Light: This lighthouse guides ships through the thick "Chatham fog" that rolls onto the town's shoreline on some mornings. Built in 1808, the light operates automatically, flashing eight times per minute.
